It wasn’t something I’d quoted for but seeing as it was Christmas, I thought it might be a nice gift. The intention was always to create a short film to give their Facebook and YouTube followers a taste of the event and capture the fun that was had sampling and learning about coffee from the masters. Here is the result…

Christmas is a hectic yet wonderful time of year. This is something I experienced on a recent assignment for Taylors of Harrogate at the ‘Taste of Christmas’ show at ExCel Docklands, London. It was an incredibly early start with the alarm and me leaping into action at 5am and a dash down the A1 to arrive before the doors of ExCel opened at 9.30am. The Taylors stand looked fantastic and had been designed and constructed completely in-house which was truly impressive. Whilst the staff busied themselves preparing for the on rush of excited show-goers, I set up and captured the stand for the design and construction team and also took shots of the raring-to-go coffee connoisseurs – all this whilst Jamie Oliver revved up the exhibitors over the ExCel PA.

Boy do Taylors know their coffee. I learnt a lot eavesdropping on the day, not just with my camera, but by grabbing snippets of Barista expertise. I concentrated on capturing moments where there was warm interaction between the Taylors staff and the highly receptive public who were eager to try as many different coffees as possible, from Taylor’s light and easy Lazy Sunday to their knock-your-socks-off Hot Lava Java. The coffee certainly put people in good spirits and made my job a lot easier. I kept my distance as it is important to be as inobtrusive as possible if you want to capture genuinely natural emotions and reactions. A good reportage photographer needs to completely melt into the background. Once I’d got the shots I neede din the bad and checked with the client that there were no special request I had not yet covered, I switched into video mode and discreetly filmed some of the superb interaction between the Taylors staff and coffee lovers. Shot in 1080 HD, in the subsequent week, I edited the footage together to create a short video of the event.

The end result was a portfolio of shots which in the clients and the whole Taylors team’s words were “Everyone around the business is loving your shots. They are the best shots we’ve had back from any of the shows we’ve done.” I love a happy client almost as much as a double Espresso with a thick crema.
